Come to this interactive workshop and learn about the history, culture and folklore of the Caribbean Coast of Colombia and how the mixing of three cultures African, Spanish and the Indigenous culture, brought about the rhythms we enjoy today such as Bullerengue, Garabato and CUMBIA.
About:
Eduardo Martinez, born in Cartagena de Indias Colombia, is one of Colombia’s greatest percussionists. As a respected ambassador of Colombia’s traditional rhythms, his music explores the influence of indigenous instruments which belong to the Colombian Atlantic as well as those of the African origin. This is represented in the diversity of the region, particularly demonstrated utilizing the “Gaitas…” and the “Tambores de Amarre.” His extensive studies in regards to these themes have allowed him to represent his native Colombia in various Festivals and Symposiums around the world. Because of his mastery of his art, he is regularly commissioned by well known Colombian artists, to participate as the percussionist on their recordings. Some of these artists are Toto La Momposina, with whom he recorded “Candela Viva” at the Peter Gabriel studios in 1992, Shakira, Petrona Martinez, Chelito De Castro, Diego Valdez, Francisco Zumaque, Ramon Benitez, Gustavo Arena, Moises Angulo, Checo Acosta, La Negra Grande De Colombia, Nicoyembe. His most recent projects were teaching workshops at the International Festival “Todos Los Tambores,” organized by CONAC in Venezuela and the International Percussion Festival sponsored by the Conservatory of Music in Puerto Rico. In 2006 Eduardo Martinez realized one of his greatest dreams when he went into the studio and arranged and recorded his own CD which is called ACABACION. In 2009 he independently released ACABACION and it is now available at www.cdbaby.com/eduardomartinez. In 2010 he created, along with associate Alberto Lopez, a Method CD for Afro-Colombian Rhythms also available on http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/alem. He now resides in Los Angeles, California.
