This exhibition presents recent work by one of Tijuana’s art scene most recognized and prominent artists Hugo Crosthwaite in his first solo show in Los Angeles.
The new black and white charcoals of Hugo Crosthwaite reveal mastery of drawing in forms of strong light and dark shadows (chiaroscuro). They depict the urban landscape constructs of the “colonias”, with austere right angles and forceful straight lines, yet penetrating, romantically human, warm and tinged with political and sensual nuances, Hugo’s contemplation of the everyday and mundane. These are in contrast with his figurative charcoals, which tend to leave us with a taste of the unexpected, and at times, almost absurd.
