A conversation with the artist HUGO CROSTHWAITE and drawing demonstration event will take place in the evening of Saturday, October 9 (7-9pm) at Tropico de Nopal. His solo show, CAPRICHOS (CAPRICHO, m.caprice, whim, fancy; (mus.) irregular but pleasing composition) continues at the gallelry through October 16.
CAPRICHOS takes us into the inner world of the absurd and magical juxtaposition of human relationships and physical shortcomings provoking thought and amazement. Whether on canvas, paper or wood Crosthwaite shows his meticulously executed figures proving his mastery of graphite and fearlessness of subject matter varying from an 8 inch to a 16 foot banner always defying balance and composition.
Hugo Crosthwaite continues to go against the current of contemporary artistic trends by working with graphite and charcoal on wood panels, paper and canvas . He is a master of the human figure who refuses to succumb to the temptation and seduction of conventional beauty.
Hugo Crosthwaite has had solo exhibitions both in Mexico and the United States. Among them "Tablas de Una Novena" at Tijuana's Centro Cultural. Most recently he participated in the collective show of Tijuana artists "Pintura Fresca" at California State University, Los Angeles, and in the major exhibition "The Perception of Appearances: A Decade of American Contemporary Figurative Drawing," at the Frye Art Museum in Seattle. Last year he was introduced to Los Angeles at Tropico de Nopal with the successful exhibit entitled "Urbe Tenebrosa" a dramatic landscape presentation of the "Colonias" in Tijuana.
